Background
Canoeing (or Paddlesport as it is often now termed) is a multi-disciplined activity with as many varieties to sample as Mr Heinz has to offer!  It can be calm and dry - or wild and wet, solo or team, recreational or competitive.

Brief History
In 1866 the first canoe club was introduced in Great Britain and we entered our first Olympics in 1936.   Slalom and Sprint racing are the current Olympic classes  and in 2000 we won a silver and bronze medal in the respective disciplines.   In recent times Great Britain has become the most successful canoeing nation worldwide with many World Champions and notable successes in exploration and first descents.  The British Canoe Union is the governing body for the sport.

Facilities and equipment
When you start the club or organisation will provide the equipment - they will tell you what you need to wear/bring.    As you progress you will need a paddle and clothing to suit the environment.  For paddling on moving water you will need a helmet, buoyancy aid, spraydeck, waterproof top - if it is winter you may need a wet or dry suit.   On flat water less equipment is required.   The type of kayak or canoe you use will depend on what type of canoeing you enjoy.  Some are plastic (freestyle/stunting) some fibreglass or carbon/kevlar construction for competition.   Canoeing can be accessed in swimming pools, lakes, rivers and the sea - but check first whether permission or a licence is required.

Benefits of Participating
Experiencing a new environment inaccessible by foot under your own power whilst developing new skills around the dynamic fluid of water.   Can be done as an individual - or join as a team.  Challenge yourself against the elements or another person or simply glow with pride at what you have achieved!
