Background
Fencers compete on a strip 14 meters long and 1.8 - 2 meters wide. Bouts last for nine three 3-minute periods or to 15 hits whichever comes first. Fencing is the art of using a sword for attack and defence using set moves. There are three weapons: epee, where the whole body is target; foil, where the target is restricted to the trunk; sabre, where the target is everything above the waist. Epee evolved from duelling, the foil from the training weapon for the duel and the sabre from the cavalry weapon.

History
The use of the sword dates back to prehistoric times and swordplay is amongst the oldest of sports. In one form or another it has played a central part in all cultures of the civilised world. The earliest known match is pictured in a temple built by Ramases 3rd in Egypt about 1190 B.C. It shows masks, protective clothing, blades with the points protected, officials and spectators. Fencing was also a sport for the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans and Germanic tribes. In the 15th century Guilds of fencing master were formed and the sport further developed initially in Italy and France until organised competition started in the 19th century. Fencing is an Olympic sport has been part of the modern Olympic Games continuously since 1896.

Facilities & Equipment
Almost all clubs hold beginners sessions and only your own trainers, tracksuit bottoms and T-shirt are needed. As progress is made, most would want their own equipment, consisting of fencing or squash shoes, a mask, breeches, tunic, clove and weapon (usually a foil). At club level the costs are modest. The protective clothing and rules make fencing a very safe sport despite its appearance.

Benefits of Participating
Fencing is an individual physical combat sport, under safe rules, where sheer strength is less important than stamina and agility. Because of the need to defend as well as attack, it is possible to set a pace you are comfortable with in a bout. At club and domestic competition level, women are on equal terms with men. A child can start (with suitable supervision) as soon as their wrist is strong enough to hold a short foil. Fencers peak later than many other athletes, and can enjoy taking part well into old age. It is suitable for all physical types. Fencing is a sport involving disciplined aggression and young adults of school age generally find it great fun.

Variations
There have been many variations historically, but now is divided into foil, epee and sabre in both individual and team relay matches. Epee is often called physical chess. Sabre is the fastest. The new team formula is often the most exciting for spectators.
