Background
Lacrosse is a skillful and exciting team game in which players use Lacrosse sticks to pass the ball to each other and then to shoot into a goal. The winning team is the one that scores the most goals. Lacrosse can be played by male, female or mixed teams.

History
Lacrosse is a game that can trace its roots back to the history and culture of Native Americans. It was observed by European settlers and developed into a modern game in Canada in the mid 19th century. Tours by Canadian players including Native Americans in the 1860s lead to the formation of clubs in the UK. Women's Lacrosse was developed in a number of girl's schools and physical education colleges in the late 19th century.

Facilities and Equipment
Men's and women's field Lacrosse can be played on any reasonable grass surface or on an artificial surface. A Lacrosse pitch is roughly the same size as a Soccer pitch. POP Lacrosse can be played on any surface, indoors or outdoors, such as a playground, school hall, or grass field.

Lacrosse equipment although usually produced in the USA is fairly readily available in the UK. Lacrosse sticks are the basic piece of equipment and can be purchased for less than £15 with discounts often available for schools and team purchases. A Lacrosse stick is all that is needed to play Women's Lacrosse and LAX. Men's Lacrosse requires some special protective equipment.

Benefits of Participating
Lacrosse can be played by people of all ages and abilities and of all sorts of shapes and sizes. The skills of catching and throwing with a Lacrosse stick can be learnt by anyone and with practice the abilities needed to play at a high level can be acquired. Lacrosse is an exciting and free-flowing game that is enjoyable to play and watch.

Variations
The main variations of the game are men's and women's field Lacrosse.

POP Lacrosse is a simplified, small-sided, non-contact version of the game which is used for introducing the basic skills and techniques.

LAX is a transitional game between POP and the full field games and is proving particularly popular in secondary schools.

Mixed Lacrosse is particularly popular in universities and colleges.
