Background
A 13-a-side sport played over two forty-minute halves.  Defenders have six 'tackles' to prevent the attacking team from scoring a 'try', which can then be 'converted' by kicking the ball over the goal posts.  If the attacking side does not score from the resulting 'tackles' then the ball is handed over to the defending side.

History
In August 1895 twenty-two clubs broke away from the Rugby Union and formed the Northern Union at the George Hotel, Huddersfield, due to the RFU's refusal to compensate players' loss of earnings whilst playing.

The British Amateur Rugby League Association was formed in Huddersfield in 1973, with a bank balance of just £25.  Twenty-seven years later there are more than 1400 teams of which there are 900 youth and junior teams.  On an average weekend in the season, close on 23,000 players will be in action.
