Background
Rugby Union Football (Rugby) is an exciting team game based on running and
handling most often seen in its fifteen a side format.
Brief History
The game began at Rugby School in 1823 when William Webb Ellis "with a
fine disregard for the rules first picked up the ball and ran with it".
Facilities and Equipment Required
Rugby is normally played outdoors on grass but in its non-contact versions,
'TAG' and 'Touch' it can use a mixture of surfaces both indoors and out
by teams from six a side to fifteen a side.
Benefits of Participating
Rugby is played at clubs and schools by all ages. Its ten positions
provide opportunities for all shapes and sizes to participate and its
full range of skills — running, handling, kicking and tackling - give
exciting involvement to all team members.
Rugby clubs are open to everyone and can be found in all parts of the
country. The equipment required for a player is shorts, socks, shirts
and appropriate footwear. Clubs provide balls, coaching, teaching
and competitive opportunities.
