Background
Squash is a popular sport enjoyed by approximately 1.5 million people in England. Squash is an indoor sport played in an enclosed 4 walled area.  The usual game is for 2 players who take it in turns to strike the ball against the front wall although a doubles version of the game is sometimes played.

Whilst the ball must strike the front wall first on the serve, great fun is had by using all the walls to play different shots and experimenting with angles.  Usually it is only the server of the point who can score on winning a rally and games are the first to 9.  A match is generally the best of 5 games.

The squash that you see on the TV is often played on a point-a-rally system — and on an all Perspex court so you can see the game!

Brief History
Whilst its origins may be traced back to Harrow School in 1820, there is a suggestion that a very early version of the game may have come from The Fleet Prison in London!
The game of 'Rackets' came about as a form of exercise for the prisoners as they hit balls against some of the many walls with their rackets.

Facilities and Equipment Required
Courts are available at a private squash or rackets club or at your local leisure centre.  All you need to play is a squash ball, racket, clean light coloured-soled shoes and cool clothing.  If you are a junior player you will also need to purchase some eye protection.

Benefits of Participating
Squash requires a level of stamina, all round fitness and good hand to eye co-ordination.

Squash is fun and sociable — most clubs have leagues that you can play in - or a regular club night where everyone mixes in and plays each other.
